In the Sun/Moon timeline (I guess?) the mother fused with an outer realm (think Lovecraft Jellyfish) parasite, and the toxins make the person sociopathic. After beating her, they separate, and the toxin remains, causing her to become something similar to narcolepsy (I think?) So they go to Kanto to find Bill who was once fused/turn to a PKMN (think thw 80's fly) to find a cure. There's more to it, but as you can see, this reply is too damn long, and I'm guessing I may have explained it wrong.
